Ivan Brunetti's "An Anthology of Graphic Fiction"

(Click for Larger Version)
Now in some stores and soon to be in others - "An Anthology of Graphic Fiction, Cartoons, & True Stories", edited by Ivan Brunetti and published by Yale University Press. You can order it here. I won't go into it too much here, simply because I don't want to attempt to write a full review of it, but the design and production are incredible and it's surely something I see as an essential book on comics (old and new). I just so happened to be able to be a part of it (and am very honored I could be) - I drew the illustrated table of contents of numerous cartoon characters. Here's a sample of some of 'em:
While I'm updating here, I may as well post a couple of random drawings I did a while back:

I love how every character has a very distinctive Onsmith look to them, regardless of who typically draws them.

THIS BOOK WILL BE GREAT!

Thanks for that, Marc! It was a really quite fun to draw all these characters (though, I don't know if I did all of them justice). Looks like you're doing new stuff over at your blog - very cool stuff!

Very cool, I'll be sure to pick it up. Definitely an honor to be in the ranks...congrats!

Quick question from a guy starting out; how do you go about soliciting for said work? I'm about to do a mailer, but I have low expectations for it.

Thanks Bob! I feel pretty insignificant in comparison to these guys, but it's still very cool to be included in this book.

Ray - to be honest, I'm not sure of the right approach when seeking illustration work. I occassionally send out emails with jpegs to art directors of alt weeklies and other publications, but I typically don't get a response. Maybe a mailer is handy - something that they phisically see instead of quickly deleting. It also helps when you know the editor of a book/publication (as in the case with Ivan's book). I suppose, like you, I'll just keep chugging along seeing what pans out.

Sounds like my situation. I've gotten a few decent profile jobs, magazine mentions, gallery inclusions... but not enough to exist SOLELY as my only source of income, which is the eventual goal. I'll share the results of any of my attempts with you in an effort to spread the love a bit.
