"Afterimage" Exhibits at DePaul, Columbia and RBSC: SAIC.

In conjunction with the "Afterimage" exhibit at DePaul Art Museum, I am exhibiting my collection of toys, ephemera, and other odds n' ends at the Roger Brown Study Collection.  Below are photos from this exhibit. (More info below.)

It's a huge honor to install my collection at the former home and studio of Chicago Imagist, Roger Brown.  An extra bit of greatness, is that the shelves that my collection sits on once belonged to Ray Yoshida.  Along with fellow artists, Edra Soto and Carl Baratta, we installed our collections exhibiting a distinct connection with Brown's and with the nature of organic collecting and art practice/influence.  This has been a wonderful experience and I hope that more folks can come to experience all the collections there.  Our installations will be up till November 18th.

Also, another satellite exhibit at the Columbia College Center for Book & Paper Arts is showing some collaborative prints I made with Paul Nudd as well as work from the fellow artists mentioned above, Lilli Carre, and Eric Lebofsky.  Below is an image of one of the print suites exhibited, entitled "Head Heaps" (Onsmith + Nudd, 2009):

I also have some of my minicomics exhibited at the Joan Flasch Artists' Books Collection at the School of The Art Institute of Chicago.  If you're in Chicago, please check out one or all of these fantastic exhibits.

"Black Eye no. 1: Graphic Transmissions to Cause Ocular Hypertension"

I'm very proud to announce the release of the dark humor comics & graphics anthology, "Black Eye" edited by Ryan Standfest and published by his Rotland Press + Comic Works.  The cover above was drawn by Paul Nudd and myself using watercolor, ink, and graphite on stained paper.

The book includes work by over 41 artists and writers from all over the world including Ivan Brunetti, Lilli CarrĂ©, Stephane Blanquet, Al Columbia, Paul Nudd and many others working the in the dark humor arts.  Please visit the Rotland site for a line up of contributors and ordering info.
I also contributed a two page spread of one-panel gags entitled, "Blood Clots."  Above is one of them.  The rest are much, much worse.

In addition to the cover, Paul Nudd and I also made a collaborative letterpress print for Black Eye.  It was printed by the great folks at Rohner Letterpress here in Chicago.  This is also for sale at Ryan Standfest's site.  More info and photos of Paul Nudd and I editioning the print can be found here.

Lithograph - "Workman's Comp"

 (click for larger version)
"Workman's Comp" is a lithograph printed by the awesome folks over at Anchor Graphics, 2010.  Although this is my first lithograph, I really only did the drawing on the stone and the rest was taken care of by Chris Flynn over at Anchor.  It is a (very) limited edition of 20 and is for sale through Anchor Graphics and myself.  It measures at 19.25" x 15" and is printed on an off-white paper.

Onsmith & Nudd Collaborative Prints Exhibition.

The opening reception for the exhibition from the print residency I had with Paul Nudd is on Friday, July 10th at Spudnik Press. If you live in the Chicago area, please come by and check out the prints we spent the greater part of 4 months on as well as come to draw with us for our newest collaboration. Address and other info is on the postcard above. Here is the press release for the show:

Spudnik Press
1821 W. Hubbard, Suite 308
Chicago, IL 60622
312.532.0304
Friday, July 10th - Thursday, August 6th, 2009
Gallery hours: Mondays & Thursdays 6:30 - 11PM, or by appointment
Opening reception: Friday, July 10th, 7 - 10PM

Spudnik Press is pleased to announce a new exhibition of work by our Spring 2009 Artists in Residence, Paul Nudd and Onsmith. Ice cream, buzzing flies, cow udders, double-tongues, fishing tackle, jarred brains, twisted limbs and floating heads. These are all things Onsmith & Nudd. Three separate suites of prints meld these two artists' signature styles into a cartoonish netherworld of darkly comic doom. Witness the mushy quadruple-stacked heads that form the menacing totem pole-like Head Heaps. Or the freshly staked heads and weird diseased udder worship of Monkey Nudd Wine. Onsmith & Nudd made close to 1000 prints this year, plenty to sift through, scour and pick apart with a fine toothed comb.

As an extra added bonus, visitors are invited to participate in Onsmith & Nudd's newest collaborative body of work, Horde of the Flies: An Infestation. Many large sheets of paper will be provided so that Spudnik's guests may draw between 1 and 1000 flies that will eventually culminate in a massive swarm of pesky winged insects. Examples, materials and sources will be provided.

$(Heart) Show at NFO XPO This Weekend...

This is the drawing that I'll make into screenprints for a show this weekend at "NFO XPO", which is part of Version Fest. Info and some explanation of $(Heart) below:

$HIT = MONEY = LOVE = ART

Paul Nudd and Bert Stabler have organized an incredibly great print show that celebrates the connection, first pointed out by Freud, between the wealthy miser who retains his feces, and the artist who plays with hers. Our goal is to present art that illuminates our reflection in the porcelain pond.

The show includes work by:

Mike Houston
Keith Herzik
Martin Mazorra
Andy Bolus
Bruno Richard
Jake Austen
Onsmith
Kristen Romaniszak
Paul Nudd
Chris Kerr
Mindy Rose Schwartz
Edie Fake
Melissa Brown
Ryan Duggan
Paul Mack
Bert Stabler

The show is taking place in the NFO XPO, part of this year's Version
Fest.

Recent Prints: Woodcuts & Screenprints...

This is a woodcut print I did at the beginning of this semester called, "Laborer and Monkey-Wrench". The block is 16"x20" and was more work than I had anticipated, but it's nice to work in a larger scale for a change.

This one is a two-block woodcut print called, "Peepholes". Both blocks measure at 9"x12" and were printed with water-based ink.

"Duel with Oklahoma" is a two-color screenprint I did in an edition of 40. It's on "speckletone" 100lb. French paper measuring at 12.5 x 16.5.

Finally, this is "Perspire/Expire", a four-color screenprint from a drawing I did previously. This is for Paul Nudd's "Corpus/Corpus" zine and print collection which will feature Nudd, Mike Diana, Greg Jabobson, Bruno Richard, Anne Van der Linden, Mariano Chavez, and others. I still feel like it's crazy that I'll be sharing "space" with these ridiculously talented folks, but Paul Nudd asked and I jumped on the opportunity.

I apologize for the poor photos I took with my 5 year-old digital camera, but at least you can get the gist of what these prints look like.

I am currently the guest artist at Partyka, featuring a gallery of some of my random drawings, paintings, and doodles (a few of 'em are above fer ya).

Partyka is a collective of cartoonists/artists from New York (Shawn Cheng, Sara Edward-Corbett, Sean McCarthy, & Matt Wiegle) and they feature daily drawings and weekly comics from the members. "Paping" is their anthology and they sell it, along with other comics/art books on their site. There's SO MUCH friggin' stuff to look at on the site, so you may as well get started now.

The Gocco Set! ...And Save Gocco!

Finally, yes FINALLY, I have updated the Shop with "The Gocco Set" of prints for sale! (I also realized that there was a problem with my PayPal buttons on my site and these have been fixed.) The Gocco box set is designed by Ivan Brunetti and contains 17 prints (made exclusively using Riso's Print Gocco Printer) by 17 artists including:

Andrice Arp
Alana Bailey
Jonathan Bennett
Sean Bieri
Ivan Brunetti
Marc Crisafulli
Fredo
John Hankiewicz
Cole Johnson
David King
Ryoko Oguchi
Onsmith
Jesse Reklaw
Bryce Somerville
Rhonda Turnbough
Britton Walters
Lauren Weinstein

Ivan also recently mentioned to me that Riso, the manufacturer of the Print Gocco Printer, has decided to discontinue all things Gocco. BUT, there is already a group of Gocco enthusiasts ("Save Gocco") campaigning to find a new home for the products other than Riso. I personally hope that these products will still be offered somehow, because this automated screen-printer has been such a helpful tool in making mini-comics and small prints. If you're a fan of Gocco prints or the printer itself, PLEASE check out "Save Gocco" to see what you can do to help out.

Nate Williams...

I took a further look into Illustration Mundo and one of its collaborators (Nate Williams) and I came across his very cool portfolio site chocked full of illustrations, screen-prints, and all around great design work.
