New Painting.

Here's some detail:
Here's the whole painting:
And here's one more for the hell of it:
This is a 2 foot square painting I did for class that's based on a system and/or pattern. I designed the four characters so they would fit in together in a modular fashion and then alternated four colors (radiating from the inside squares outward).

That's cool! Are they giving you A's for this stuff??

Thanks Dave! I suppose my grades are okay for the most part. The hard part is being able to make some artwork that I enjoy (and will keep) while still following the constraints of an assignment.

what class is this for?

Wow, I wish I were back in school. There's a fun geometry mixed in with you're everyday cartoon fun. Great colors, too---the yellow brings it all together somehow.

Kyle - It was for "Contemporary Issues in Drawing & Painting." I recommend taking any class taught by Michelle Wasson. She's really great.

Bob - Thanks! Yeah, I've been toying around with geometric shapes a lot lately... The background had to be yellow (according to my logic), although I had thought about incorporating the four colors I already used.

Jeremy- I want that fucking painting. I'm gonna break into your apartment, take that painting, and leave a couple twenties where it used to be.

And yes, I concur; Michelle Wasson is the shit.

JEREMY!!! It's been many many years and this is so random, but you know, occasionally I check on your page to see what you're up to and have completely stumbled over this painting... would you sell it? can i buy it? i love it so very much!

Jake - thanks for the enthusiasm towards the painting. I hardly do painting of any worth, so I may actually hold onto this one for a while.

Robin - great to hear from you! How's everything going for you? Feel free to email me at onsmith @ sbcglobal.net Thanks for checking my stuff out. And yeah, I think I may hold onto the painting for a while - if a show comes up, I'd like to maybe use it. Email me whenever you like.

I got to see this in person on the 10th floor, very nice. I will try and pick that class up.

You taking summer classes?

Onsmith said...

Thanks Kyle! Yeah, I'll be around from mid May until mid July. Are you taking Summer classes as well?

For some reason a lot of your work reminds me of Karl Wirsum. I don't know why. I saw some of his work at the Cultural Center this weekend and your work came to mind.

I'm a big fan of Karl Wirsum's work and I too saw his retrospective at The Cultural Center. It was incredibly inspiring. But yeah, the flat bright colors and consistent lines are really appealing to me.
